Industrial estates in Sarawak have been called on to form disaster prevention and management teams not just for safety, but also as an added attraction to draw investors to the state. KUCHING: Industrial estates in Sarawak have been called on to form disaster prevention and management teams not just for safety, but also as an added attraction to draw investors to the state. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who is also Industrial Development Minister, said a good record in disaster prevention and management is a strong pull for investment from both domestic and foreign fronts.

Commending ASSAR Senari Group for forming a public and private sector partnership team called Emergency Mutual Aid Senari (EMAS) for the fast growing Senari industrial area.

"This pioneering effort by ASSAR Senari Group is worthy of mention and praise because disaster prevention and management is crucial to the attainment of economic prosperity and a good record in this sector is a strong pull for investment, be it from domestic or foreign.

"As the Minister-in-charge for Industrial Development in this state, I strongly urge other designated industrial areas or zones in Sarawak such as Pending Light Industrial Estate, Samajaya Free Industrial Zone and Demak Laut Industrial Park, to emulate EMAS and form similar teams," he said.

Dr Chan said this at a barbecue gathering at ASSAR Refinery Services Sdn Bhd, ASSAR Senari Industrial Complex (ASIC) on Sunday.

Also present were ASSAR Senari Group chief executive officer Syeed Mohamad Hussien, chief operating officer Said Abdul Rahman and EMAS chairman Mohd Aiman Abdullah.

The dinner was also to mark the fourth year for both the Central Oil Distribution Terminal in Senari and ASIC.

Still on disaster prevention and management, Dr Chan said the State Disaster Relief Committee, which he chairs, would in future work hand in hand with ASSAR Senari Group and EMAS on a whole spectrum of related exercises.

"As a disaster affects each and every one of us, an effective and successful disaster risk management can only be undertaken through concerted efforts from all of us, the government, private sector, development partners and the citizens of this rapidly growing ASIC and its neighbouring industrial zones," he said.

On another matter, he also commended ASSAR Senari Group`s courage to take bigger steps into a new yet challenging industry such as oil and gas and bringing it to Kuching.

"There is no doubt that the Central Oil Distribution Terminal and ASIC is one of Sarawak`s great success stories," he said.
